HAROLD HARRY
Coast Salish Artist and Carver |
|
Born to the Village of Church House Homalco Tribe in 1957
The Village lies on the South Entrance of Bute Inlet on the North Coast
of British Columbia, Canada
The Homalco are also known as The Homathco People.
We are the most Northern Tribe of the Coast Salish Nation.
I currently reside in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island
and Rightfully carry on the traditions passed down through my
Great Grandfather Frank George from my Mother's side.
My carving heritage also includes Tsimshian and Kwakiutl, from my Great Grandmothers
who come from these nations. These priviledges came through their respective dowries.
My Carving Rights were Inherited from My Mother's Grandfather,
FRANK GEORGE, of Church House whose works are Housed in the
following locations:
The Provincial Museum
Royal British Columbia Museum
(Victoria, British Columbia)
The following masks are some of those found in the Royal British Columbia Museum
and were carved by Frank George from the village of Churchhouse at the mouth
of Bute Inlet.
These masks he used once a year around our Christmas time at a feast held for the
whole village of Churchhouse. He would have people use these masks when he served
the food from the feast. The last time these masks were used was when my mothers
first tooth came out. (There was a first tooth ceremony).
In August 1999 the people from the Provincial Museum Archives researched the
Coast Salish Masks
and stated these masks were the biggest and most diverse collection of the Coast Salish Nation.
There are more which will appear on the page in the near future.
Frank George was born in 1879 and died in 1939.
His carving consists of Masks, Feast Dishes, Totem Poles, Paddles and many
other items.
He was a Master Carver. Frank George's wife was Marianne from Hartley Bay of the Tsimshian Nation.
